Alverta M. Serafin

Alverta M. Serafin, 81, of Bloomsburg, went home to her Lord Saturday, September 03, 2011 at her home. She was born December 24, 1929, in Berwick, a daughter of the late William and Dorothy Hutton McGarvey. She attended North Centre Schools. She is a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Lightstreet, Columbia County one room school house alumni, life time member of the Bloomsburg VFW post 804 auxiliary and the auxiliary of Mifflinville Rangers, TOPS 1133. She worked at in the garment industry a majority of her life including, Lady Esther, and she retired from Milco in 19797 due to health problems. She enjoyed caring for her family and extended family, flowers, making quilts, embroidering, reading and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband William Serafin who passed away in 1997 ending fifty years of marriage and a brother Robert McGarvey. She is survived by her children Barbara J. Long of Berwick, Bruce Serafin and his wife Brenda of Huntington Mills, Linda Miller of Bloomsburg, Nancy Carol with whom she lived with, Robert Serafin and his wife Paula of Berwick, and Janet and her husband Paul Stackhouse of Camphill, twelve grandchildren, many great grandchildren, sisters Shirley Force of Loganton, Joann Schultz of Orangeville and Joyce McGarvey of Benton, a brother Richard McGarvey of Florida. She also helped raise several young boys needing a home while she raised her family. Services will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at St. Luke Lutheran Church 9 St. Lukes Way, Bloomsburg, Pa 17815 with Pastor Jeff Bohan officiating. Burial will be at Elan Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to8:00 pm at Rodger T. Bunnell Funeral Home 435 Market St., Bloomsburg, Pa. 17815. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in her memory to St. Luke Lutheran Church 9 St. Lukes Way, Bloomsburg, Pa 17815 or Columbia Montour Home Hospice 410 Glen Avenue, Suite 200, Bloomsburg, Pa 17815.
