Clayton Hess Obituary

Clayton E. Hess, 95, of Jerseytown passed Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Millville Health Care Center. He was born December 1, 1917 in Jerseytown a son of the late Webman and Ida (Brink) Hess. Clayton was the oldest of five kids. He attended Jerseytown and Berwick Schools. He stopped going to school to help support his family. He met Edith Kusel, from the Philadelphia area, through his sister Marian. They were married on October 24, 1942. Edith passed away on May 20, 2010 ending almost 68 years of marriage. Clayton spent most of his life in Jerseytown where he built his house and garage. For many years he and his family lived throughout Pa busy with his job building roads and bridges. Jerseytown was always home. He was also a welder. After retirement, he and his wife started doing wood crafts and square dancing. He was very proud of his involvement with the Starlets of Jerseytown. As often as possible he would walk along in parades, carrying little ones that got tired. Clayton and Edith traveled throughout most of the United States, to visit family or with Good Sam Club. Clayton was known for helping people fix things; He had to "Hess" things. Clayton and Edith were very involved with the Madison Community Center. They worked in the kitchen for square dances for over 25 years. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Mildred Karchner. Clayton is survived by four daughters: Christine and her husband Edwin Styring of Limestoneville, Shirley and her husband Delavan Whitenight of Danville, Susan and her husband Neil Wertz of Danville and Joan and her husband David Greenly of Nacogdoches, TX, twelve grandchildren: Christopher, Robin, Chris, Rebecca, Bobbie, Wendy, Jennifer, Delavan Jr., Adam, Gerald, Lucas, Alan and Sara and twenty seven great grandchildren. Clayton is also survived by a sister Marian Halderman of Florida, two brothers Dayton Hess and his wife Dorothy of Jerseytown and Jay Hess and his wife Sue of Texas and many nieces and few nephews. Services will be Monday at 4:00 pm at Bunnell Funeral Home, Inc. 179 E. Main St. Millville, Pa with Pastor William Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 3:00 pm until the time of service. Friends unable to attend may send condolences at bunnellfuneralhome.com.
