Felecia Girton Obituary

Felecia Hewett Girton passed away at home in Millville after an extended illness on September 13, 2024, peacefully, surrounded by her family and other loved ones.

Felecia was born in Florence, South Carolina in 1941 as the eldest child of Virgie and Eldridge Hewett.  When she was only five, she lost her beloved father.  The church played an important role in her early life; Felecia played the piano for services as a teen.  She graduated from high school and attended Winthrop College on a scholarship before marrying her Millville Yankee and graduating from Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in English.  She also earned a Master’s Degree in Remedial Reading and another in Instructional Technology from Bloomsburg University.

She had many talents that were reflected in her wide-ranging careers: music journalist, songwriter, civic leader, property developer, and instructional technology adviser, but none was more meaningful to her than being a teacher, especially as a remedial reading instructor in the Millville School District.  Many of her students have remembered her fondly over the years.

Her civic involvement was also important to her.  She chaired the Board of Trustees of the Bloomsburg Hospital and the Board of Directors of Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble She was a member of the Bloomsburg Chamber of Commerce, the P.E.O., and many other organizations.  As a college student, she became fluent in French to further her goal of becoming a flight attendant and seeing the world, but marriage proved the greater adventure. Instead, she became an avid traveler, visiting far-flung places around the globe with her favorite traveling companion, Karl.

Of her many achievements, she took the greatest pleasure in being a parent to her children and grandmother to her grandchildren.  She was kind, intelligent, fun-loving and brave, and will be deeply missed by those who knew her.  The world is truly a better place because she was in it.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Karl, her son Matthew Girton (Joanette Saba-Sturm), of Lock Haven, daughter Melanie Girton (Craig Marshall), of South Orange, New Jersey, and four grandchildren: Chelsea, Toby, Oona and Van.  Also surviving are five siblings including those from her mother’s second marriage: Barry, Abby, Myrna, Marc and Tommy, and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews and great- nieces and nephews.

In memory of Felecia, the family asks that donations be made to the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble at bte.org, the Millville United Methodist Church at 75 S. State Street, P.O. Box 470, Millville, PA 17846 or P.E.O. at peointernational.org, organizations that were close to her heart.

Services will be held Saturday September 21, 2024 at 11:00 am at Millville United Methodist Church with Pastor Robert Strozyk officiating. Family will receive friends from 9:30 am until time of service at the church.
