Harry Eugene Martenas, Jr., 65, of Orangeville (Rohrsburg) died on December 14, 2024. He was born on November 27, 1959, and attended Greenwood Elementary, Millville Jr. and Sr. High School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lived in the Boston area for several years where he was house pianist for the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge and organist at the former Second Church of Dorchester Congregational.
When he returned to the area in the late 1980’s, he first worked in local government and was later employed by the Bloomsburg law firm of James and Mihalik. From 1997 until 2015, he served as the Information Technology Manager for Columbia County.
Harry was a skilled photographer who enjoyed sharing his pictures with friends and family. He was also an accomplished cook who drew inspiration from Julia Child. He was an avid reader of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, a subscriber to the New York Times, and a contributing member of WVIA, the PBS and NPR affiliate of Northeast and Central Pennsylvania. Harry enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe with fellow members of the American Guild of Organists and Organ Historical Society. He was a confirmed member of Kitchens United Methodist Church.
Harry was an excellent student and early adopter of technology, but from a young age, his principal interest was music. He was a piano and organ student of the late Phyllis Farr of Millville. He performed as a solo artist at a variety of venues and with countless local groups. He especially enjoyed helping young people develop their own musical skills. Harry was accompanist for the Bloomsburg University Concert Choir from 1992 through 2017 and organist and pianist for the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg during that same period. He was instrumental in helping First Presbyterian obtain their German-built Bluthner Model 2 Concert Grand Piano and loved playing both it and the pipe organ for services and concerts. He most recently played at St. James Church in Stillwater.
Harry was predeceased by his parents, Harry E. Martenas, Sr. and E. Darlene Martenas (Black), and his beloved dog, Bear. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Martenas Broome (Robert) and Linda Martenas Resseguie (Phillip), 2 nephews and 3 nieces, 4 great nephews and 3 great nieces, and his companion cat, Karma.
