Jay Stackhouse Obituary

It is bittersweet to announce the passing of Jay R. Stackhouse, Rohrsburg, on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021. He was born on Jan. 18, 1930, the son of the late Oscar and Maize Elizabeth Stackhouse.

Jay grew up a farm boy and his love of farming continued throughout his life. As a young boy, among his many farm chores, his most liked chore was to care for the animals; he especially liked chickens and horses. His favorite horse was Queen, as she was very attentive and would stand still while he groomed her and put her harness and collar on. He also enjoyed taking the meats, eggs, cider, fruits, and vegetables, to market in Bloomsburg. As a teen he not only worked on the family farm but for neighboring farmers.

Jay’s professional trade was plumbing, roofing, and heating, employed by D.W. Woolcock, Millville, before becoming self-employed.

Jay was also employed throughout his working career at Kennedy Van Saun, ILC, Girton Manufacturing and retiring from Polaron, as a maintenance supervisor.

Jay was very hands-on, meticulous, and had a high level of mechanical ability. Jay had many abilities and skills beyond plumbing, roofing, and heating, to include carpentry, stone and masonry, and electrical. Those skills allowed him to build a cabin in Elk Grove.

He planted a large garden, making certain there was plenty for his family and to share with others. He would often supply green beans, beets, and horseradish, to a local church for their church dinners, making sure to make extra horseradish to give to family, friends, and neighbors.

From memory, Jay made a working cider press to resemble the one used to press apple cider on the family farm.

In his younger years, Jay enjoyed country music, dancing, spending time at his farm and cabin, and summer vacations with his wife and children at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Jay was a lifetime member of the Millville Fire Company and Orangeville Sportsmen’s Club.

Jay married his wife, Ruthie, on Feb. 16, 1952. They celebrated almost 67 years of marriage before her passing on Dec. 22, 2018.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Larry, in 2015.

He is also survived by two daughters: Darlene (Michael) Sabo, Colorado Springs, Colo., Kathy (Rob) Musselman, Rohrsburg; two sons: Jay Jr. (Gloria), Yukon, Alaska, and Randy, Millville; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Stackhouse, Rohrsburg; 13 grandchildren: Cara, Ben, Christy, Shannon, Kendall, Abraham, Jeremy, Jessie, Sam, Cody, Curtis, Chris, and Katie.
