Lucille "Doris" Long Obituary

Lucille “Doris” Alma Long (Avery), 96, of Pine Summit, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024, at her home surrounded by loved ones.  She was born August 31, 1927, in Millville, a daughter of the late William Avery and Laura Filter.

She is survived by her son Donald Long (Debra) of Mansfield, PA, grandson Walter (Wade) Long of Middleburg, PA, granddaughters Dorena DellaVecchio (Dominic) of Dillsburg, PA, Derica March (Roger) of McClure, PA, and Keisha Reitz of Harrisburg, PA, great grandchildren Broghan, Reiko and River Long, Abagail, Rachel, Gedion and Grace DellaVecchio, and Chandler and Paisyne Long, and great-great granddaughter Lennox Stone.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children who she loved dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Walter Long, brothers, William, Arnold, Noelen, Emmitt, Donald, and James, sister Laurabelle Young, and grandson Chance Long.

Doris was a member of the Millville High School class of 1945, and later went to Devine Providence Hospital for LPN school.  She worked at various car dealerships with Brown’s Chevrolet in Berwick being her favorite where she received the top sales award and was also the first saleswoman. She worked for the Bechtel Power Plant in Berwick, the Bloomsburg jail, and retired from the Danville State Hospital in 1993.

Doris loved playing the guitar and singing in several cowboy bands throughout her life, with one of her highlights being singing for the mayor of Williamsport at Brandon Park.  She was always the life of the party, hosting and attending many in her day.  Some of her proudest moments were celebrating the 4th of July in Millville, where she rode her palomino mare “Goldy” in in the parade and was the best dressed gal in the caramel corn stand for many decades.  Doris enjoyed traveling abroad to various places including Hawaii, Thailand and Japan.  She was known affectionately as “Gram” by many children of friends and neighbors’ whom she loved caring for in her retirement years.  She often spoke fondly of those in the community that supported her throughout her final years giving her the opportunity to remain in her home.
