Richard Musser Bunnell, 90, devoted and cherished husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, continues on with his journey. He lived his 90 years to the fullest.

“Dick” was born, raised and lived his entire life in State College and Boalsburg, Pennsylvania.

He married his dearest love Gwen Griffith Bunnell in 1954, after meeting on a blind date at Penn State University. They loved their retirement years together, spending winters at their Florida home and summers at their cottage on the lake in Canada. Their marriage meant the world to him.

Dick graduated from State College Area High School, from which he later received the Distinguished Alumni Award. He was a proud graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. Dick was an avid Penn State fan his entire life.  He loved few things more than PSU football games with family and friends, and Penn State wrestling with his brother. He served as an MP in the U.S. Army, stationed in Augusta, Georgia during the Korean War. Dick spent his entire career at Penn State as Director of the Conference Center, having a large impact on the formation of the Scanticon, later renamed the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center. Dick and his wife Gwen traveled near and far to auctions and enjoyed antique collecting, most especially to add to Dick's antique toy collection. Fishing was a favorite hobby he shared with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was the epitome of the community-minded gentleman, serving others throughout his life. Dick enjoyed years as a member of his church Boy Scout troop, served on the SCASD school board for 30 years, and was a devoted lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church in State College. He was a supporter of the Boalsburg Heritage Museum and Boalsburg Memorial Day. He donated time to the formation of the Penn State Visitors Center, was a Rotarian for many years, and donated time and resources to numerous charities.

We, his family, have lost a man who was a true gentleman, the leader of our family by example. Always patient, generous, and thoughtful beyond measure, he held his family up as his most loved part of life. His eyes lit up when he spoke of his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He so happily attended countless sporting events and activities in support of them.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gwen Griffith Bunnell, his brother Theodore Robert Bunnell,  his sister Nancy Franks and her husband, Jay, daughter Carol Bunnell Grim and husband Stephen, son Theodore "Tib" Bunnell and wife Mary Fogle. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Erin Grim McCombie and husband Esch, Andrew Grim, David Grim and wife Amy, Taylor Bunnell, Madison Bunnell, and Kayte Kocher Derhammer and husband Walt. His great-grandchildren, who adored him, are William, Gwen, and John McCombie, Millie and Ainsley Grim, and Ashton, Bentley, Mila and Ava Bunnell.

Each of us has learned so much from him and benefited from his kind demeanor and thoughtfulness. His humility, community commitment, and loving impact on his family will continue as we all try to emulate what he shared with us.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Millard and Mildred (Musser) Bunnell, his sister in law Betty “Tish” (Keller) Bunnell, and step-granddaughter Liza Kocher.
