Robert Wertman Jr. Obituary

Robert W. Wertman Jr. 89, entered into the arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday August 21; and into the arms of his beloved Carolyn (Squeak), who he married on April 1, 1942 and celebrated 53 years of marriage until her death in 1996. He was born on February 18, 1923 in Lime Ridge and was a son of Robert and Helen (Stout) Wertman Sr. He graduated from Scott high school in 1941 and was drafted into the US Army Jan. 1943, serving until Nov. 1945. He was part of the Normandy Beach D Day Invasion, also serving in the Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe campaigns and earned 4 Bronze Stars. He was born and raised in Lime Ridge, Pa. and lived there most of his life, until 2009, moving to Stoney Brook Circle, Orangeville. He most recently resided at Berwick Retirement Village from March, 2012 until present. After his discharge from the military, Bob went to trade school and became a Printer, working at Keystone Publishing in Berwick, and later as a proofreader at Penn Set, Bloomsburg, retiring in 1985. He also sold advertising part-time for Associated Advertisers, and worked at the Bloomsburg Fair and Folks Greenhouse after his retirement. He was lifelong member of the Lime Ridge United Methodist Church, serving on the Official Board and as a trustee in his early years. Also he was a member of Washington Lodge and Caldwell Consistory and the Bloomsburg American Legion, serving for many years as their Historian. He was always physically active, being a down-hill skier until the age of 83 and was often seen riding his bicycle around Lime Ridge, sometimes alone, or on the "Green Demon",a specially built bicycle to carry the grandchildren on around town. He was well known for his beautiful flower gardens, fish ponds and virtually weedless vegetable garden, always having the first ripe tomato before Fourth of July. He was well read and kept a personal journal for years. He enjoyed Phillies baseball and Penn State football games. He and "Squeak" enjoyed traveling quite a bit. They had a memorable Amtrak trip to California and back, as well as winter trips to Florida and North Carolina. Bob spent a year in Plymouth, England, before the D-Day Invasion, getting to know a special family there. He traveled to London and Plymouth many times over, returning to his beloved England ands "adopted" family on at least 3 other occasions after the war. Bob was well known in the area for his stained glass work, making pieces for individuals, and for several churches. He was featured on Mike Stevens "On the Pennsylvania Road" twice for his work, and for his service in the war. He received a "certificate of appreciation" for his stained glass work. Bob knew everybody and they all knew him. In his later years he went visiting many nursing homes handing out candy to the residents. They called him "the candy man". He will greatly be missed! In addition to his parents and wife Bob was preceded in death by a sister Jean Ohl and Brother Earl Wertman. He is survived by three children.
