Robert "Bob" M. Long

Robert “Bob” M. Long, 97, of Millville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, at his residence. He was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Orangeville, a son of the late William and Bessie (Halderman) Long.

He graduated from Orangeville High School and then was drafted by the United States Army during World War II. He endured three years in the Third Division Infantry in the European Theatre serving as a radio operator. He was a proud veteran and a true example of the greatest generation. He worked at TRW for 38 years. He was a very talented plumber and pipefitter, and a jack of all trades who could make or do anything with his hands. However, his greatest gift was his love and devotion for his family and friends.

Bob was a lifetime member of the Millville Fire Company, Millville American Legion Post 564, and Oriental Lodge 460. He loved to work in his flower beds with his wife, tinkering in the garage building things especially bird houses, and going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. Bob was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.

Bob is survived by three daughters: Susan Stackhouse, husband, Joe, of Deland, Florida, Betsy Swank, husband, Ray, of Millville, Brenda Grassett, husband, Kirk, of Middletown, Del.; seven grandchildren: Crystal Brennan (Craig), Stefanie Case (Troy), Tawny Hons (Brad), Tory Smith (Devon), Brandyn Fought (Mellissa), Brooke Deihl (Matt), Brittany Fought; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife, the former Helen Gillaspy, who passed away on Nov. 17, 2018; and daughter, Sandra Smith, who passed away in 2009.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Millville American Legion Post 564, 259 Legion Road, Millville, with Pastor Gordon Smith officiating. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Legion.

Burial with military honors will be held Saturday May 20, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Millville Cemetery.
