It is with terrible sadness that we announce the passing of Verner Grant Lewis, Jr. (Vern) on Friday, September 13th, 2024. He was taken much too soon. He was born June 14,1958 in Johnson City, New York. He was the proud son of parents the late Verner Grant Lewis, Sr. and Myrtle Wheeler Lewis. He attended grade and high schools in Greene and Chenango Forks, New York, graduating high school in 1976. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1976-1980. He often spoke of his time in the service and enjoyed his training overseas, regularly recalling his cold weather training in Northern Europe and the Sierra Nevadas. After the military, he lived for several years in North Carolina and has lived in Pennsylvania since 1998. Vern worked at Hanson-HRI for over 20 years.
Vern had a deep love for animals, particularly horses and mules, having worked with and owned since living in Pennsylvania, often quoting Winston Churchill (although he liked to think it came from Ronald Reagan), “..there’s nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse”. He was an avid reader, hobby farmer, and was always tinkering and cultivating his property.
He had the kindest soul. When a neighbor and friend needed help, he would get up from a plate of food to go immediately help. He enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains. He often recalled a trip out west with his wife Vera to visit extended family and said that everyone should travel as it’s good for the soul. He was an open-minded man, never judging folks for their beliefs, having friends from all walks of life. He loved music, particularly John Prine and country musicians. He was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, and husband, always checking on them and helping until the day he passed.
He was the beloved husband of Vera Singleton Lewis for 26 years and a devoted father to sons Clint, Jesse, and Clayton as well as step-sons Austin and Jason. We are so fortunate to have had him in our lives and the void left will never be filled.
He is survived by wife Vera Lewis of Unityville, PA, sisters Mary Jacobson of Troutdale, Oregon and Carol Fargnoli of Chenango Forks, New York, and children Clint (Dakota) Lewis of Berwick, PA, Jesse (Jenn) Lewis of Durham, NC, and Clayton (Tasha) Lewis of Millville, PA. He is also survived by stepsons Austin and Jason Eads of North Carolina. Grandchildren Kayden, Avonlea, Clinton Jr., Liam, Carter; step grandchild Maci Klock.
He is preceded in death by his father Verner Lewis, Sr. and mother Myrtle Wheeler Lewis, brothers David and Donald and sister Sharon as well has his many cherished dogs, mules, and horses.
